Product Description

UNPLUGGED won 1993 Grammy Awards for Album of The Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. It''s interesting to hear Eric Clapton in an acoustic setting, because he made his mark as one of the early proponents of high-decibel rock. Stripping down the music of an artist as technically proficient and historically based as Eric Clapton was a stroke of genius. Hence, it''s no surprise that the result, UNPLUGGED, is billiant as well.

Certified at 10 million units by the RIAA. (2/01)

Amazon.com

Clapton caught the "unplugged" trend just at the right time, when the public was hungry to hear how well rock stars and their material can hold up when stripped of elaborate production values. Clapton himself seemed baffled by the phenomenon, especially when picking up the armload of Grammys Unplugged earned him, including Record and Song of the Year for "Tears in Heaven," the heart-rending elegy to his young son, Conor. That song and a reworked version of "Layla" got most of the attention, but the rest of the album has fine versions of acoustic blues numbers such as "Malted Milk," "Rollin'' & Tumblin'', and "Before You Accuse Me" that make it worth investigating further. --Daniel Durchholz

Clapton fanboy, so there is your grain of salt. now for the vinyl review of this remastered masterpiece. the original CD of this performance was stellar. Clapton has always had excellent sound engineers, both live and in studio. to give you an idea of the quality of his sound engineers the CD is still used as the reference for "HD Audio" downloads (16bit/44.1kHz). so the background for quality is set. recently this concert was remastered and YES it is noticeable. the soundstage is wider, his voice has more detail/warmth, each note from all instruments can be heard as if you were there in the middle of the set. Clapton is the inspiration for me, and countless others, picking up the guitar. i have the same Martin model he used with his line of martin strings. i can play all of his songs and the sound is close (tonally, not as clean or accurately) but with this vinyl it is as close to being there, again even better than the digital.

as with any music there are certain things you just can''t compromise on. first the artist has to use quality recording gear, then the studio has to master it correctly. this has been perfect on this album. next you have to ensure your part of the audio chain is up to snuff to get the best out of it. IMO speakers can overcome other areas that may be lacking, but you don''t have to spend thousands to achieve quality sound. next is the play back device. for Vinyl a quality cartridge can make a huge difference, again you don''t have to go super expensive. lastly the amp should be decent, and most amps these days are more than capable. now if you have a good setup then this vinyl 4 record set should really really be in your collection.

my set-up;
elac B6 speakers (14 gauge wire speaker cable)
u-turn orbit with ortofon 2M red
custom made phono pre-amp (i know how to make them but any good pre-amp will be fine)
Denon AVR-1912 with "pure direct" mode for phono (this bypasses all digital paths and just amplifies the analog signal from the pre-amp)

if you have better equipment i''m jealous, because i know this album can sound phenomenal.

Wow... the last few vinyl releases that I’ve picked up from the Reprise label have been stunningly great. This is a great vinyl release. A double album gatefold edition on 180g ultra quiet vinyl. The cover fit and finish is fantastic as well. These unplugged events for MTV were well recorded. This Clapton album has a full spectrum sound quality to it. It is clear in the highs, mid range is just right and the lows are impressive for a record. Each track has been mixed well and the master is flawless with an open soundstage and clarity in voices and instruments. Running on Faith really shines and stands out, Layla is better than being there, and the blues numbers are just entertaining. Signe is also one of my favorite tracks that really shines. It deserves 5 stars and if you’re considering it on vinyl, you can’t go wrong here. It was a landmark night with a great crowd that became a legend and is now larger than life on vinyl!

This was one of my favorite CDs back in the 90s and now having the vinyl on my 2 channel system is just superb. This is one of the best sounding records I have and is truly a joy to just sit back and close your eyes.....I feel like I''m on the front row. The separation of instruments is perfect and placed just as they were on stage. The sound stage is very important to my listening experience and Eric''s voice being off to the right a bit first had me wondering, but when you watch the videos, he was a bit off center. All the instruments are just so natural and live sounding. Some reissue albums are taken from the wrong source and sound flat, but not here. Don''t hesitate, this is a MUST have for any record collection.

A very good live acoustic recording with an intimate atmosphere which captures the sense of presence and being there. I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile. • Clarity – very good, no muddiness, excellent tone and detail • Channel separation – very good • Channel balance – conventional as would be expected • Sound Stage – reasonable, not the widest but to be expected given the limited instrumentation. It is an intimate sound stage • Distortion – non audible • Compression – good highs and lows, no frequency flattening or loss audible • Atmosphere – very good, the feeling of a live set comes across very well and the recording has an intimate feel. The audience is well recorded and not overly intrusive • Bass – low frequencies – very good given that this is an acoustic set. The bass elements are clear and distinct • Treble – high frequencies – this together with the midrange is where this recording excels, it is warm and detailed. The string resonance from the acoustic instruments is clearly audible • Vocals Clapton’s vocals are never the greatest but on this recording they have good warmth and detail. The female backing vocals are just that, a little too far back. As a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as it’s just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse. Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CD’s are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame. Modern “remasters” can both enhance and degrade a recording. The statement GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is the limiting factor. Ignore this at your cost.

Eric Clapton''s "MTV Unplugged" is nothing short of a masterpiece. Opening with the short instrumental Clapton and the band quickly set the tone for the blues standards. I bought this album for "Layla" but the entire album is a joy to listen to with "Nobody Knows You When You''re Down And Out" and "Before You Accuse Me" Clapton''s phenomenal guitar solos makes you feel like your front at the concert. Clapton and the band are showcasing the magic that only happens at live events. MTV do a tremendous job at releasing these types of albums. The audience is applauding passionately after each track and offering a standing ovation after the performance. During the show, i could actually hear a pin drop in the small theatre when listening through my KEF LS50''s. This is the greatest live album I have ever heard and I''m very happy to recommend it to any audiophile or Eric Clapton fans. MUST BUY!

Having recently got back into Vinyl after several years of listening to CD''s and streamed music, I decided there were a select few albums that warranted being in my vinyl collection and Eric Clapton Unplugged is one that definitely needed inclusion. This is a 180g pressing and it is absolutely superb! There''s something about the sound, the size and artwork of an LP that CD''s lack. I also love that anticipation when the stylus lowers onto the album and then the music starts. I''m pleased with this purchase and the price I paid (about £16) wasn''t overly expensive. This version is the single album which, I think, misses out one track over the double album that is also available, but, this one suited my needs. Highly recommended.
